Thema und Ziel

This is the introductory lecture to bioinformatics and its algorithms of the bioinformatics group. The lecture is mandatory for the group's advanced lectures in bioinformatics.

The topics of the course include sequence alignment, multiple alignment, homology search, molecular phylogeny, comparative genomics, gene and genome annotation, RNA analysis, protein structure, hidden markov models, machine learning.

Objectives: The course shall give an overview of bioinformatics topics and understanding of fundamental algorithms. The special focus of the course is on sequence analysis.

Prüfung / Leistungsnachweis

Der Leistungsnachweis zu Vorlesung soll in Form einer mündlichen Prüfung erbracht werden. Die aktive Teilnahme an der zur Vorlesung angebotenen Übung ist dabei essentiell für diese Prüfung.

Voraussetzungen

Von Vorteil bzw. voraussgesetzt sind

• Grundlegende, einfache molekularbiologische Kenntnisse
• Grundlegende Kenntnisse in Algorithmen, wie aus Informatik Grundstudium/Bachelor
• Programmierkenntnisse in C++ (für Übung)

Introduction: Molecular Biology

The course requires very simple and fundamental understanding of molecular biology. In the first two lectures you will have the chance to repeat and/or learn the necessary foundations.

• Chapter "Molecular Biology" of the book Clote, Backofen. Computational Molecular Biology. An Introduction.
  The chapter gives a simple introduction to very basic biochemical topics. It was written by computer scientists for computer scientists and therefore should be well accessible for you.
